Cycle I
The fellows of the KPHLI’s inaugural class represented state and local health departments, community-based organizations, and the university system. During the 12-month cycle, these fellows attended four 1 ½ day sessions and completed inter-session activities and assignments. As a capstone to the curriculum, they developed case study projects to apply the skills they acquired during the institute. Graduating fellows presented their capstone projects prior to the Kansas Public Health Association annual meeting in September 2004. Upon successful completion of their capstone presentations and other program requirements, fellows were admitted into the Leadership Academy, a new alumni organization for KPHLI graduates.

Cycle II
The second cycle of twenty-seven fellows completed the leadership institute curriculum in September 2005. These fellows presented their capstones and were welcomed into the Leadership Academy prior to the Kansas Public Health Association's annual conference.
To continue to expand Kansas health professionals’ response capacity through the leadership institute, the second KPHLI class was recruited from 10 of the state’s 15 terrorism and disaster preparedness regions. The program’s geographic diversity embodies its intention to foster cooperation and alliance within the public health system at multiple points and levels.
